As a user of Dynamics AX for over a decade, Moody were no strangers to version upgrades. On this occasion, the jump was from AX4.0 to AX2012R3. Moody approached Seaton Partners to evaluate the upgrade options, and the outcome of that exercise was indeed that a traditional upgrade would not yield the best solution. Instead, Moody effectively re-implemented the solution and took the opportunity to re-engineer some business processes and cleanse legacy data. In fact, some of the data design dated back to an earlier version before AX4.0 and was no longer fit for purpose in AX2012. Without being constrained by legacy data structures as would be the case in a data upgrade, the team were able to leverage great new tools in AX2012R3, such as the new financial framework and workflow engine. At the same time, the team were able to fast track the implementation by taking the solid elements of AX4.0 and plugging them straight in.
The team took the opportunity to re-engineer a few core processes in AX2012 to ensure that they made best use of the new features available. This was mainly in the order processing, and pick/pack/despatch areas, but we also saw notable benefits in credit control, expense management and project costing.
