D365 Planning Optimisation Overview
As part of Dynamics 365: 2020 release wave 1, Planning Optimisation Add-in was introduced to Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management. This enables the master planning calculations to occur outside of the Dynamics 365 and its related SQL database.
This gives improved performance and offers the potential of completing planning runs during office hours, delivering advantages shown below.
Planning Optimisation gives the potential to:
- Reduce the impact on other processes during the master planning run
- Do more frequent planning runs
- Have shorter duration planning runs
- Further growth capacity in the planning system
- Architecture and data flow
The Planning Optimisation service is located in the same data centre country or region as the related Supply Chain Management instance. When run, master data and transactional data are sent from Supply Chain Management to the Planning Optimisation service.
The data flow is outlined below:
Planning Optimisation functionality doesn’t currently provide all of the features available in the built-in planning engine, so there is a planning optimisation fit analysis tool which allows you to evaluate if it is suitable for you. The Wave 1 release currently supports planned purchase orders only and does not support planned production orders.
The Dynamics 365: 2020 release wave 2 plan will expand planning optimisation for Manufacturing to perform supply and production planning in near real time with in-memory services.
As Microsoft have stated, Planning Optimization will eventually replace the existing built-in Supply Chain Management planning engine, this is an area that users of master planning need to start to consider going forward.
Additional functionality to cover planned production orders is outlined in the recent Dynamics 365: 2020 release wave 2 plan. This plan describes all new features releasing from October 2020 through March 2021.
