Microsoft Dynamics Business Applications Updates July 2019

This month saw a number of news announcements for Microsoft Dynamics Business Applications, including: an AI Builder to support the Power Platform, the PowerApps Portal launch, the general availability of Forms Pro GA, the retirement of Dynamics 365 for Project Service and a breakdown of the Wave 2 release due in October 2019.


AI Builder for Power Platforms

Power Platform is the collective name for Power BI, Power Apps and Flow – a low code platform which allows businesses to analyse data, act through application and automate process.

It can be used with Office 365 and Dynamics 365 and allows everyone from the professional developer to the frontline worker, to participate in driving better business outcomes by building apps.

The Power Platform is possible due to the Common Date Service (CDS), the underlying data platform that provides a unified and simplified data schema so that applications and services can inter-operate.

It has now been announced that AI Builder, a low code artificial intelligence platform that supports Power Platform is available for consumption on data that already exists in the Common Data Service (CDS).

Key capabilities include; binary classification, test classification, object detection, business card reader, form processing and customer testimonials.

PowerApps Portal

Microsoft reports that customers continually ask to have the option to share apps with external users, and have submitted dozen of cases for working with partners, customers, franchisees, and others who are not part of the developers organisations.

In response to this, PowerApps Portal has been announced. This will allow users to create a low code, responsive website which allows external users to interact with the data stored in the Common Data Service directly from PowerApps.

The introduction of PowerApps Portals will see the capabilities offered by Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement portals merged to ensure that all the Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement application portals gets the benefit of the simplified low code offering.

Key capabilities of PowerApps Portals include, the ability to build websites easily with a new, dedicated portal designer, integration with Microsoft services to enrich content, and for users to model complex business process using pro dev extensibility.

Forms Pro GA

This month saw the general availability of Microsoft Forms Pro, which means everyone in your organization can collect timely feedback from customers and employees and gain actionable insights from the results.

This enterprise-survey solution integrates with Office 365, Dynamics 365 and Power Platform. It is built on Microsoft Forms for Office 365 with new, advanced survey capabilities to further support business survey solutions, including point-and-click simplicity to create and send custom surveys, integration with your business processes, and AI-assisted features that provide a deep-level of insights across transactional and behavioral data.

Dynamics 365 for Project Service Automation

Microsoft’s goal is to have all customers on the latest version of Dynamics 365, and have recently announced the retirement of all legacy versions of Dynamics 365 for Project Service by the end of February, 2020. All customers must update to Project Service version 3.x by February 2020.

This change aims to provide all users access to the latest capabilities and improvements and offer a better support experience.

The following versions are impacted: Project Service versions 2.x and 1.x

Microsoft will continue to release regular updates on these versions until October 2019, and will continue to provide support until December 2019.


2019 release wave 2

The 2019 release wave 2 for Dynamics 365 brings new innovations that provide you with significant capabilities to transform your business.

The enhancements to Dynamics 365 applications include hundreds of new capabilities across the business process applications: Sales, Marketing, Customer Service, Field Service, Project Service Automation, Finance and Operations, Talent, Retail and Business Central.
