This weekend saw a new case study released by Harmania Ibarra and Adam Jones of London Business School on Microsoft’s shift in company culture, record temperatures with highs of 35°C in the East Midlands, and it was also a record-breaking Saturday for the Seaton Team.

Microsoft’s ability to make waves in the industry even after 40 years is the topic of the new case study, and one which we have read with interest as the results of their culture shift has seen them regularly vying for the most valuable company on global stock markets, with a market capitalism about $11trn.

But changing culture was no small feat, shifting to cloud-based services saw 40,000 people having to change how they do their jobs and 5,000 new specialist hires. A reduced number of internal review meetings, greater use of performance bonuses, a new productivity tool, and a new programme called ‘Reimagine Managers’ which aims to foster an approach of coaching and caring for the staff.

But as noted by EVP and President, Microsoft Global Sales, Marketing and Operations, Jean Philippe Courtois, changing corporate culture is an enormous task, and comments it is a work in progress. Microsoft, he says, has shifted from a “fixed mindset” to a “growth mindset”.

Seaton Partners may not be the size of Microsoft but we do value culture, the need for the growth mindset, and not just in our own organisation but those of our clients. This weekend was a prime example as we all pulled together as a team to deliver a project which will build into a culture change for our client, whilst streamlining process – saving them time and money.

It’s a project that we are all very proud of and we were happy to forfeit our weekend, pina coladas and tan lines, for air-con and team spirt on the hottest day of the year so far.
